Before he buys it he should take it to a mechanic shop that you trust and pay them to look it over really good, for wreck repair, signs of oil sludge from no oil changes, what needs to be done to it maintenance wise, etc. We do a used car inspection for $45 and sometimes people bring 2 or 3 cars before they get a good one. Or you could do it yourself, if they won't let you take it to your mechanic then deal would be off for me.
If I'm going to finance a car though, it's going to be brand new.
