There's no need to have your entire music collection in the car. Just pick a few hundred for traveling. One custom cd can hold maybe 18 songs, a tiny 4 GB thumb drive can hold 400 at 320k, or 100 at full cd quality. Plus you can go to song #19 without waiting 10 seconds for the disk to change.
Making up playlists sounds way fussier to set up, too fussy to change on the fly, and much less likely to play exactly what I want to listen to than selecting a number of CDs appropriate to the length of the trip. I don't mind pushing a button once or twice to skip, repeat, or move to a different CD out of sequence, but anything involving a keypad - or worse yet, a touchscreen - just ain't gonna happen. Trust me, you don't want me trying to drive with reading glasses on given that just walking around with them on feels unnatural and mildly disorienting.
