Sometimes it doesn't hurt to hear them out. Example, when I got my Nexus 6 with Next, I had to pay the Taxes upfront which in my case was about 50 bucks. After that I pay 35 dollars for 20 months. So that is 35X20=700 or retail for my phone.
If I chosen to go into a contract, it would have been 215 up front and 35 dollars extra a month for 24 moths. So that is (35X24)+215=1055. With AT&T, it would have costed another 355 dollars if I decided to sign into a contract in the long run. Don't know the specifics on Verizon, but usually they all have something similar.
