Two comments, yes, and hell yes.

In addition to requiring confidence, those who carry also need to self- evaluate themselves as being dumbasses or not, too. I knew a dude in high school... he was a dumbass, not a guy that I had any liking of. One day, a few years after high school, he was selling a .357 to somebody. He was apparently being a little careless with it, and his best friend admonished him to be careful with it. He replied, "I'm not a dumbass, it's not loaded," and to PROVE that it wasn't loaded, he placed the muzzle against his temple and pulled the trigger. That dumbass is no longer with us, having sprayed weak brain material all over his best friend, but that's how Darwinism works: Those dumb enough to not treat EVERY firearm as though it has one in the pipe, ready to go, will be weeded out of the gene pool.

Second, those who display to show badassery are idiots. I've carried for over 20 years now, and have never shown it to anybody, a single time, ever, as any display of my ability to win. I take great comfort in many situations, knowing that it is there if and when I need it, but I have yet to display it at all. On the other hand, there's my brother: I had given him a 9MM as a gift, and within weeks, he was in jail for going through a drive- thru, and showing it off. No, he wasn't robbing the joint... he was, I kid you not, just showing it off, telling the girl, "Check out my awesome piece! Ain't it cool?" Yes, she called the cops, because it's just not normal to show a perfect stranger your piece when you are in the drive- thru. He was an idiot, and he knows it, now that he is older and wiser and has a firearms violation on his record.
