I have the baffles in my Boss 302's side exit exhaust opened up to 7/8" and always drive with the window cracked open even in winter just to hear it. As someone else already pointed out, with all the sound insulation in a modern car, some system to pipe in sound from the engine may be needed to still enjoy the sound from the engine.
GM may end up doing the same thing in the future on specific models to enhance the experience behind the wheel. It won't sway me one way or the other on buying any particular car. One downside to changing mufflers is that it will always be loud, or not sound like you want. Artificial sound plumbing that would allow you to turn it down or off would seem to offer the best of both worlds.
My wife does not appreciate the sound of my Boss as much as I do, and she would probably love for it to be Town Car quiet when motoring down the highway on a long drive.
