My understanding is that newer engines are inherently more quiet due to their improvements in efficiency (not just in gas mileage, but in the way they actually operate). Automakers take measures to boost the sound so it reminds people of the older models.
Of course, if it bothers you that much you could always get a set of Flowmasters...
