Electric AWD seems like a neat idea. Instead of a 3rd differential to split power between the front and rear, you would retain the mechanical front or rear drive, then have an electric motor to power the other axle (or use two and power each wheel independently) whenever its needed. At least thats my understanding of how such systems would be implemented. It seems like it could be a more mass efficient way to get a hybrid car with AWD, and could have some descent performance benefits as well. And it wouldn't necessarily be any more complex than a more conventional way of doing a AWD hybrid -just a different sort of complexity.
