Even though there is no tuning available to optimize the engines for race fuel, and we really do not know how much impact the race fuel actually had (unless they have datalogs that they are not sharing?), there remains a distinct chance it had a positive impact.
At the least the 109 likely helped prevent the engine from pulling timing.

I am scratching my head why they did that also.
At least do a run on 93 octane before you put in race gas.
