To clarify, the iPhone 6 and 6+ do have 5.0GHz WiFi. And 5.0GHz WiFi can have higher speeds but it also has less distance. The reason for increased speed is because the frequency has the ability to be more dense but since it is denser, it also has less range.
The Biggest advantage especially when in an apartment building is that it is less common. Since a lot of devices use 2.4GHz (e.g. A wireless mouse, wireless internet, controllers, etc..) it leads to a lot of traffic and congestion.
