I see what you are saying, I think I could live without indepentent control and run them off of the DDL's (or a relay driven from DDL and pick up 12V somewhere in the neighborhood, or perhaps the parking lights) I clearly would not go to the effort of getting the wire all the back in the car and rigged to another switch.

The light switch in the car makes a lot of sense, not having the same harness and just not using those connections seems like it would cost more than save but I will be the first to admit I know very little about the underlying costs of car production.

When I did electronic design before I moved to software development and later management, we did consummer electronics and more often than not we would have the same printed circuit board for what might be 3-5 models with different features, the only difference would be that models with lessor features would not have the parts to support them populated on the board or the controls for them on the case. That is where I was drawing my anaogy from, it would cost us a lot more for a mass produced item to have a different printed circuit board for each model then to use just one for all and just not put the parts and controls in. I was thinking the same would apply to a wiring harness, but from what you say it sounds like this is not the case.

I have looked at a few after-market ones and it seems many have you hook them to the parking lights, but I see problems with that so I would likely go for a DDL's or relay off of the DDL power, since they are on all of the time. I say the relay because I am not sure if the DDL's have 12V or use a voltage divider somewhere to drop the voltage, or it's the bulbs used?? Guess I will find out when I try.
