And to me, that's pretty depressing.
I mean, look at the '69 Camaro SS and look at the 2010 SS. The original got maybe 12 mpg and ran maybe a 14.5 quarter. Our 2010 SS will get what, 22-24 MPG and run a 13 flat. The 2010 SS is faster in a straight line, faster around a turn, stops harder, gets better fuel economy, and is light years safer than the original. So, do I think GM could build a car that gets 48 MPG and runs a 12.5 or something ridiculous? Uh, yes. You guys keep doubting Americans, but I'll keep believing in them.

Those cars were Tanks back then... If any would get into an accident with today's Camaro it would tear it in half.. Safer for hitting a wall perhaps but not safer in a car by car high speed accident.. And I think you hit the nail on the head, American ingenuity is a great thing and the current V8 is an example of that. However there is a limit to that technology and currently the push is to get rid of it and the Govt. is paying for many of these "gas guzzlers" that fall into the "clunker" category and is paying you to get rid of them and take them off the road for good.. It's only a matter of time the V8 is gone...
