I don't think that true communication over the internet is easily practiced. Things like tone of voice and body language are all but totally MIA. Smileys are a weak substitute. Now consider the age groups for which anything much longer than a 140 character tweet is considered a lengthy reply. My thoughts are that too much is left to interpretation on the reading end.

I can certainly agree with this paragraph, and will add "emails" to it. Over the years, work emails have become a monster instead of "business communications". Tried my best to deliver short, concise emails but the younger folks viewed them as mean and demeaning. What the hell? This is work, we work here. For a while, they wanted us to add smiles and that kind of stuff, but now they are viewed as ridiculing the recipient. Only person it was ridiculing was the sender, as that kind of stuff was inappropriate for a supposed professional work environment.
