It's a sign of a company's TOTAL engineering capabilities, from the past AND present, which indicates the potential for its future.
GM, through their former Hydra-Matic Division that's now a part of GM Powertrain, has a l-o-n-g story of success. You may recall Rolls Royce sourced GM Hydromatics for their vehicles, until the Germans bought them out. They even found their way into LINCOLNS.

TOTAL capabilities, in-house, allows a company to FULLY design their vehicles with a TOTAL ability. Not half-azzed and dependent on the abilities (or lack thereof) of OTHERS.
Not even M-B makes their own self-designed transmissions.
