Not just to weed out charlatans, but to see how it was set up.
Modern timing equipment often has the temp or DA, but even without it, it tells the track, the date, time, and 60' times.
Why is that useful? If the track is closed at 10:06 AM on Tuesday, April 1st, and they say they ran street tires, yet the sixty is a 1.8x, you know they sprayed the crap out of the track with VHT.
And you know they rented the track, so they were big shots with a pit crew and pro driver, perhaps 140lb soaking wet, and did not have to obey all the safety restrictions, like doing multiple burnouts through the lights before staging.
In other words, in the real world at the dragstrip, your result will certainly vary.
