You'd have to try AutoX to understand. It's pretty intense, but you won't hurt your car other than cone hickeys. The same cannot be said for RR tracking. You can total your car pretty easy. More people wreck their cars at the dragstrip than AutoX by a huge factor. Probably 100:1.

There are several HPDE (high performance driving experience) events coming up in my area (3 Milwaukee Mile, 1 Road America). They describe them as a good place to gain track experience before progressing SCCA Solo. Next one is Aug 21 so I think I'll check it out.
