Uh... which nameplate are you referring to? 580HP is more than all the Corvette models in production, right? And so is 505HP. Corvette is currently surpassed by CTS-V Sedan, Wagon, Coupe, Camaro ZL-1 and Z/28.
Even in 1998, there was no real protection. While the Corvette was advertised at 345HP@5600rpm, the Camaro was advertised at 305HP@5200rpm.
Assuming 15% drivetrain loss this new LS1 engine was in fact about 355HP in both Vettes and Fbodies, and the peak HP RPM was about 5800rpm.
See what they did there? They reported HP numbers for the Camaro BELOW their peak rpm.
So for today, the biggest engine you can get in a Chevrolet comes in a Camaro.
And YES, they did protect the Viper. It gets the best power-to-weight powerplant in the Dodge lineup. Hands off! That 640HP V10 is reserved for the Viper. Even if the Challenger would have been faster and better handling by using it. It's a 300lb lighter powertrain. That's big.
