I honestly didnt read the entire thread, but I'll give you this one. Kudos to PayPal for refunding their money in this instance.

However, PP's current T&Cs 13.3 clearly state Personal Payments are ineligible for Purchase Protection. I assume the Gift payment falls in that category.

They go on to state this at the end of that section...

Even if your payment is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection, you can file a Dispute and try to resolve the issue directly with the Seller; however, PayPal will generally not find in your favor if you escalate a Dispute to a Claim for an item which is not eligible for PayPal Purchase Protection.

I still say "Gift" at your own risk...
