The trouble with feeling that the Autobahn concept can just be adapted for use in the USA is that as mentioned, first the roads are different and differently maintained. Secondly, the way we earn a driver's license is different. Next, frankly the level of driving ability in the USA is somewhere between driving by braille and blissful ignorance. Lastly we are self-absorbed with doing other things like eating lunch or applying makeup, while driving. I saw a guy eating a bowl of cereal at 65mph once. Another time I saw a guy holding a nice thick book up to his steering wheel while cruising along at high speed. That type of person should have no privilege to drive a car.
