If you recall the issue with the Exploder and tires was that testing had found that the vehicles were prone to roll over and would fail in the coming Government roll over testing. Fords response was to lower the tire pressure to help prevent roll overs because it was too expensive to widen the axles an inch or two (which they did eventually do on the next design refresh). Unfortunately the tire pressure they recommended was below the safe pressure that Firestone recommended causing the tires sidewall to flex too much which creates heat, which eventually caused the tires to fail, usually catastrophically. So the tires would explode and cause the vehicles to roll over, ironic isn't it.
