They were Firestone tires... and FIRESTONE recalled 6.5 MILLION of them... But yes, the Explorer was more prone to rollovers...
And of course you can't turn on the news without hearing about the GM ignition issue...
The highlights...
* A February 25 recall of about 1.37 million vehicles for “ignition switch torque performance”—affecting the 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5; 2003-2007 Saturn Ion; 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR; 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice; and 2007 Saturn Sky.
* A March 28 expanded recall, also for “ignition switch torque performance,” affecting 823,788 vehicles, and the 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR; 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt; 2008-2010 Pontiac G5; 2008-2010 Pontiac Solstice; and 2008-2010 Saturn Sky.
* An April 9 recall of about 2.19 million vehicles for the broader “ignition cylinder” issue, affecting 2005-2010 Chevy Cobalt; 2006-2010 Chevrolet HHR; 2003-2010 Pontiac G5; 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice; 2003-2007 Saturn Ion; and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky.
All car companies have their screw ups... we could go back and forth all day...
