I guess a new set of heads and an intake could be all it would need. Isn't that all that separated LS1 from LS6? So, maybe that would be doable. Essentially, a factory HCI 550hp LT1 to make it a LT2 to fill the "gap" between LT1 and LT4.
The LS6 had a new block, heads, cam, valves, heads and intake.
