Old, but the best video ever made to explain a differential.
A very basic breakdown of how the gearing works:
The lower the ratio (but the higher the number) the faster your car will get up in speed. But, it won't have as high of a top speed.
The higher the ratio (but the lower the number) the slower your car will get up in speed. But, it will have a higher top speed.
