My understanding of this is GM knew there was a design flaw and neglected to take action to correct it, thus putting a vehicle on the road that they may have known to be unsafe.
The trouble with civil actions are that you still have to be able to establish that the injuries/deaths were preventable/survivable even if the safety systems acted correctly. In the end, I believe the actions will be settled out of court. It's my opinion that the people whom are suing GM are understandably angry but it doesn't change the fact that what they're really after is GM's money. Which sadly makes them no better in my humble opinion. Aren't they also putting a price on the life of their loved ones?
Toyota was hammered with a big fine but faced much less scorn than GM. The media does love to pile on GM, as do many people, some in this thread have already expressed the desire to see GM fail. Seeing GM go down will effect much more than crooked execs.... and to answer an earlier question, yes it will effect business. It already has, my sales are down by almost 50% YTD.
People like me are the ones who get hurt when GM ****s up. Keep that in mind, there are real people with real obligations and responsibilities tied to GM's success and/or failure. I'm not suggesting people ignore this sort of thing so that people can make a living, I'm suggesting that you consider what you're really advocating.
I am GM, I'm very proud of my brand. If you really are that upset and if you really feel that GM should go under and are building unsafe cars, then I'd fully expect you to sell or trade your car....?
Any takers?
