except that wasn't what happened. just slightly brushing the steering column would cause the ignition to move to the off position. they have memos from engineers stating that during test drives. and more so than that, when the key was in the off position all the airbags would deactivate. GM ignored those memos, or as they claim, never knew about them.
this is just the tip of the iceberg. there will thousands of civil suits. there are a dozen or so deaths that GM admits were due to the ignition design flaw. NTSB says there could be hundreds. in fact, the feds probably aren't done yet either. the 35 million is the maximum that GM can be fined for failing to report a safety issue. unless things have changed, the justice department is still investigating and may bring criminal charges against the company. if they do that, and GM has to pay a fine to make it end, the fine will probably be larger than the 1 billion Toyota had to pay
