Some dealers focus on the quick sale with a stupid high price, and make their money once per customer, to hell with future sales, it's all about "now". Others offer sales at very reasonable prices, work with each customer closely to ensure satisfaction with both the vehicle and the deal. These make their money on repeat sales: if a person is happy buying that Cruze for junior, or Malibu for the missus, they'll come back for that Silverado work truck, Corvette play toy or Tahoe people-mover, and all the related service for said vehicles. They'll also then tell about their positive experience to all their friends, and get a little kick-back on each subsequent sale. I can list several of each type here in St. Louis. Thankfully, I got one on the good list, and my dealer has been great to work with, even months after the deal was complete.

Hang in there, Richard. Write your check for the original agreed amount - then see where the deal goes. Make them sweat a little!
