is different, or at least it can be.
At least one mfr has denied warranty coverage for repairs that could have been attributed to known participation in the same form of motorsports that the same mfr tacitly supports with gear such as harnesses, helmets, and other racing parts. An SCCA guy I know who works in the insurance industry rarely admits to driving anything in terms more specific than "a car", let alone post pictures with a visible plate number.
On the street, your plate is just another anonymous number that's generally gone from any other person's awareness in a matter of seconds (if they even bothered to look at it in the first place). Call this safety in numbers, or hiding in plain sight if it makes it easier to understand.
Me, I can't help it if somebody was to dig deep enough to track any of my cars down to me, based on a picture of unknown date. But I don't have to make it too easy.
