I think a lot of people assume everything will work perfectly, so they're completely caught off guard when it doesn't. Nobody bothers to teach new drivers how to handle emergencies because they've become rarer as car quality has improved and most people are driving new cars.
Those of us that started out in less than perfect cars learned to expect the unexpected and how to handle things like engine stalling and brake pedals that go all the way to the floor or clutches that lockup, or throttle cables that stick. My first car was a 40 year ol 56 belair, stuff broke pretty often
