Those little scoops are pretty much required for the intake/airbox squashed on top of the Boxer engines that Subaru utilizes. For a Flat engine.. It looks like a nightmare on paper.

But they are probably the most balanced engines out there; hence why we swear by them on light/GA aircraft.
