Us "oldtimers" remember when chrome was a big deal with chrome on bumpers, grilles, mirrors and the chrome wheels (called rims) were a big plus to trick out your car.
Well, with higher gas prices, the need for more efficiency killed the heavy metal car of our time and the chrome went with it. Not much need for chrome wheels if your car didn't have any chrome on it!
Enter the era of the black car. The VIP look driven by dignitaries, secret service, limos, etc. Nearly every BMW or Mercedes was black for a while...lol.
Then the public got the idea and started ordering the black for their cars; they wanted to have that VIP look.
As was said, just like the chrome wheels of our time completed the car, the black wheels of this time, complete the cars look.
Be it the VIP look, aggressive look, the stealth look, etc, black just does it.
I think it is trendy, and you will see a change over time, so go with what works for you.
