Everyone has their own preferences but here is something to think about.
If the only thing he is consuming before his workout is NO Explode, which by the way has arginine in it, arginine can cause diarrhea and/or cramping, then he is already in a catabolic state and further exercise will only contribute to it, if it were me I would have a good solid high protein high GI meal prior to working out but it would take roughly 2 hrs to digest such a meal so if time doesn't permit a whey protein isolate and high GI shake would be a good choice, something simple like the whey and a serving of dextrose or maltidextrose would serve the purpose well. I feel that consuming proteins and carbs pre/post workout are essential for maximizing muscle gains and minimizing muscle break down, they say breakfast is the most important meal but for those who weight train pre/post workout is the most important.
