Yes they have pretty much always shared the same underpinnings between the two, with content & styling being the main differentiators between the two.

On top of that, when doing market research GM found out that most buyers tend not not cross-shop GMC's & Chevrolets very much. Usually it ended up something like if Chevy was a persons #1 choice, they had GMC as their 3rd or 4th choice & vice versa. So if the GMC brand were dropped, GM would stand to lose the majority of those sales.
