The AFGs can feel a little more natural if you're extending your arm and grabbing the whole handguard. Even with VFGs I've gotten into the habit of grabbing in front of the grip and having my bottom fingers on the grip and top on the handguard with thumb on top of the rifle... One is not better than the other so I'd suggest you buy it just to try.
