I know there are I think atleast three different 93 Mazda Rx7 with exact same Hp and other specs but one is a Rs version and another is a GT version with a bigger wing and BBS wheels even though its really just like the Rs version. Another is with the Nissan skyline GTR's I think there are three R34 Midnight purple editions, which is just a color change. So yea Gt does inflate it a bit. But they do have enough variety I think in reality taking out some of the variants its more like 600 to 700 uniquely different cars.

The thing that really pissed me off about GT5 was that they just imported a bunch of cars from GT4. The models were horribly ugly, and it was OBVIOUS. So F'n lazy for a game that took SO LONG to get released.
