It was more the terrible brand image that killed Hummer. They were the poster child for the big, gas guzzling SUV. Nobody who bought them really cared, and they weren't really any worse than similar SUVs for fuel economy. But none the less, they kinda came to represent all that was wrong with GM at the time. So they had to get rid of the brand, when selling it off didn't work they axed it.

Funny thing is, Hummers are (supposedly) fairly well respected around the world. But in North America there is a ton of resentment toward the brand.
