I bother because occasionally I come across someone with a different point of view than mine who is intelligent and mature enough to have a spirited political debate in a respectful manner and I enjoy it. Granted, I'll admit, coming across someone like that is very rare.

I think you're plain wrong here. In the real world I have plenty of friends who have a different political view from mine and we all know we are different and it does not affect our relationships. If someone is so immature that they won't be friends with me because of a political view then they were never a friend of mine to begin with
