I don't believe there is any good answer for that as every situation will be different. However, although the .223 is a small round it's velocity is very high. By design, the round typically tumbles when it hits tissue causing tearing and ripping. Additionally, you'll get more penetration and a better potential to defeat armor if the perp is wearing any. However, this is just my opinion. I'm no expert.
