My opinion is that a sidearm should only be used while you get your rifle back online. If you're going in on an active shooter you should be just as well equipped if not more than the perp. Additionally with technique changes you should be coming around corners without too much gun. Take a few steps back and start pieing those corners and door ways. You shouldn't ever stick your rifle through door ways, out windows, or around corners. If you're worried about over penetration, perhaps consider frangible rounds.
