I can't say what I want to about keeping the threat alive or not... But I always shoot to eliminate the threat. And while they have a heart beat and a gun they are a threat.
We do have slings on our ARs and I've thought about that too. Although we went over having the AR people as point. I just don't really see why other than for long distance shots.
In a place like Walmart I'm thinking an AR would work really well. In many places you have some really good sight lines where you can see across the store.
We aren't issued anything other than our sidearm. If I want an AR in my trunk (no mounts anywhere inside) then I have to check one out at the start of my shift and return it at the end of shift. Kinda sucks... But I may start doing it.
Even when it comes to a stand off I think I rather have the AR. Even though two years ago they had one and they guy who shot and killed the guy had only his glock. The guy with the AR never shot. But I'm thinking it was the lighting that screwed with that side of them.... The guy pulled out many objects trying to get shot before he pulled out the actual gun.
