In the lead up to both the C6 and the Gen5 there did seem to be more info, and C6 regular production did start on the expected date. Gen5 started on March 15, exactly 4 weeks later than the first announced date.
The reason we knew so much about Gen5 start up problems was more to do with initial retail deliveries being recalled while at the same time hundreds in the transportation pipeline remained in staging areas until fixed. I do not recall Chevy even admitting those in the staging areas needing any specific fix altho it was easy to figure out what was going on.
But I thought then and think now Chevy could do a world of good by stating up front what is going on. I am certain we got more info from BG Assembly in the summer of 2004 then we are getting now, but that is my memory and I have not figured out how to check it.
Chevy has always been aggressive toward leaks, what made the Camaro leaks newsworthy was the extraordinary lengths Chevy went to to identify then discipline the leakers.
