Everyone knows that Area 51 existed. There's videos and pictures of it on the internet.
If the government lying is big news to you, then you live a very sheltered life.
I can tell you just from the Space Program, that the government hides a lot from the general public.

I wouldn't want to go there. There's ton of reports of workers there dying from the exposure to the toxic chemicals there.
It's not so top secret anymore because it's no longer the home of our most top secret technology. Why would they house it in a base that's so famous? Now it's just the home to a bunch of our stealth aircraft.
