First, not everyone in the US can get high-speed internet.
Second, Steam does NOT always need to be on. You can still play the games offline.
Third, I am amazed that so many see so little wrong with having "everything" connected to the Internet, all the time. I guess it is the information security professional (and privacy nut) in me.
