You're right you don't have to be connected just to play games, but if you wish to take advantage of the Clouds boost in performance you have to be.

Personally I enjoy all three, I was even big into the Wii when it first came out back when Nintendo was making games I liked. All three (PC, Xbox, and PS) has their own pros, cons, and each one has their own genres they excel at better than the others.
