The way mufflers work is inside they have a bunch of things called baffles, which are basically walls within the muffler that block/ slow down the sound wave that is passing through it. And easy way to think of it is like a silencer on a gun. As the sound waves enter the muffler the area expands to slow down the velocity of the sound waves and with the baffles it slows down their velocity even further before they exit. The final sound produced is the slowed down sound waves. That is why muffler deletes are so loud because there is barely anything slowing down the sound waves.
