Agree with the OPs decision to protect family and self. As someone that also serves (USN), I know what you mean about being armed here (I have a CCW for FL) and being over "there". Its more of an aggressive adrenaline rush here because you don't want things like that to happen, over there you almost anticipate it. I think you made a great choice being as the other person was armed. It would be no different if he had a knife.
