Piston runs cooler and cleaner....
Simple as that! Without the carbon laiden gases being pushed back into the chamber like DI rifles the weapons stay cleaner. As for potential failures they are about the same.
Stoner actually wanted the gas piston set up in the AR's from day one but was over riden by Armalite execs
