The nearest 3-series would be the 300HP 335i which starts at $43k and can be optioned up to $60k but is smaller and less powerful than the SS. The 535i starts at $53k and only offers 300HP as well. Barely what I would call "performance sedans". That's what the M3, 550i and M5 are for.

Since Pontiac sales averaged only 1/6 of what Chevrolet sold each year: 2,000 X 6 = 12,000 SS. More than enough. You can't limit Chevrolet to what the Pontiac brand could achieve.
