The name 'Ecotec' on these has nothing to do with past versions of that engine family other than the name itself. These are derived off of small block V8s, not inline 4s.

Its quite a bit lower in specific output (hp/L) than V6s you normally find in cars, but its right in line with the numbers we see for its bigger brother, the 5.3L V8. Besides, when it delivers nearly best in class fuel economy along with best in class towing & payload ... I don't have a problem with it. And on the other side of things, there is just something wrong when a pickup truck's engine has a redline of 7000 rpm or so (like the F150).
