Chrysler is developing a supercharged version of its legendary HEMI V8 to compete with high-performance vehicles from General Motors and Ford.
According to Automotive News, Chrysler is currently putting the finishing touches on a new supercharged V8 HEMI engine that will debut under the hood of the next-generation Dodge Challenger. The engine could also find its way into the engine bays of other vehicles within the Chrysler lineup.
Code-named 'Hellcat', the supercharged HEMI V8 is tipped to displace 6.2L and generate around 640 horsepower. The supercharged mill will put the Challenger on par with the Chevrolet CamaroZL1 and Ford Shelby GT500.
The next-generation Challenger is slated to debut in mid-2014 as a 2015 model, but it remains unclear if the Hellcat engine will be available at launch. Whenever it does arrive, the mill will be available with Chrysler's latest eight-speed automatic transmission.
Those interested in the ultimate Challenger better act fast, though. A Chrysler engineer described the Hellcat as a "last hurrah" before more stringent CAFE regulations take hold, indicating the supercharged engine will be one-and-done.
