Well let me tell you my Cobalt experience.

I bought my Cobalt because of a number of reasons but very high on the list was mileage because my truck was killing me too. I bought the SS and I absolutely love the car. You can pick up an 09 for 21000 so within 1000 of your budget and they have a 5yr/100000 warranty.

I get 27-28 overall with about 32ish on the freeway (22ish in the City)-even when I drive aggressively I still average 25-26 overall. So far, 100% trouble free since I picked it up in 11/08. I can vouch for the standard Cobalt, but the SS so far has been a huge pleasant surprise to me. I even like driving it more than I like driving my truck (and I love my truck).

I love 'Vettes, so don't take this the wrong way- but everyone likes to quote the 28 highway number. They get significantly worse mileage everywhere else so unless your drive is all highway with no congestion, it's not a mileage queen.
