The key is to fight force with equal force. By pulling out your CCW and shooting him, you'll have to explain why you thought shooting someone who had a hammer was justified.
I'm glad you stomped on the gas and got outter there. I woulda called the cops and let them look into it, but in the heat of the moment, you probably wasn't thinking about that option.
